Setting a performance budget on a project can be extremely useful. The purpose of a performance budget is to hold yourself and your team accountable for focusing on performance throughout a project. The idea is to create new features or projects, and keeping the experience fast for your users.
There are great metrics to help measure a project’s performance. Typically a good thing to watch is your project’s overall page weight. Setting a goal page weight can help make sure you’re not exceeding the assets loaded to the user.
Brad Frost has created a simple Performance Budget Builder tool to help keep track of your page weight. The Performance Budget builder lets you lay out your template types, set a size budget for each template type, then plug in the sizes for each asset category that will load in the template.
